There are games that tell unforgettable stories.
There are games with deep mechanics.
There are games with emotional performances.
And then there’s Mixtape — a three-hour interactive Spotify playlist where you occasionally press forward while emotionally vacant teenagers stare into the middle distance and explain how hard it is to be interesting in suburban California.
Critics have called it “a masterpiece.”
Normal people have called it “wait, that’s the whole game?”
The entire experience feels like somebody fed Life Is Strange into an AI prompt alongside “A24 vibes,” “vinyl collection,” and “people who say cinema unironically.”
The Art Style Looks Like a Webcomic From 2014
The first thing you notice about Mixtape is its aggressively smug comic-book aesthetic. Characters look like they were designed by a committee whose only instruction was:
“Make everyone look emotionally exhausted and vaguely ironic.”
Every face has that flattened bean-mouth indie animation style that somehow keeps surviving despite humanity’s repeated attempts to move forward. Several reviewers praised the visuals as “stylized,” which is technically true in the same way instant noodles are “cuisine.”
Even some players online mocked the look, calling it overused and cheap.
Voice Acting That Sounds Like a Table Read at an Art School
The dialogue delivery somehow manages to feel both overacted and completely lifeless at the same time.
Every sentence sounds like:
- a therapy podcast,
- a spoken-word poetry night,
- or two freshmen trying to out-miserable each other outside a record store.
Nobody talks like this.
Nobody has ever talked like this.
The cast constantly pauses between lines like they’re waiting for applause after saying something profound, when in reality they just described eating slushies while sad music plays.
Story? What Story?
Technically, Mixtape has a plot.
In the same sense that a scented candle has a narrative arc.
The game follows three friends hanging out before adulthood arrives, which mostly involves:
- walking slowly,
- remembering things,
- listening to licensed music,
- and occasionally doing tiny minigames that feel stapled on moments before launch.
Several reviews openly admitted the game barely qualifies as a game. Even PC Gamer said it struggled to justify player interaction at all.
The “gameplay” is so limited that at times it resembles a Netflix show with controller vibration.
The Most Obvious Life Is Strange Clone Since Every Other Indie Narrative Game
The similarities to Life Is Strange are almost comical:
- awkward indie dialogue,
- dreamy coming-of-age themes,
- licensed alt music,
- artsy camera framing,
- emotionally confused teenagers,
- slow pacing mistaken for depth,
- and the constant feeling that somebody desperately wants this adapted into a streaming series.
Except Life Is Strange at least had:
- choices,
- tension,
- mystery,
- and actual player agency.
Mixtape removes most of that and replaces it with “vibes.”
The Games Journalists Gave This Thing 10/10 Because They’re Allergic to Gameplay
The funniest part of this entire saga is watching games media treat Mixtape like it reinvented storytelling itself.
IGN gave it a perfect 10/10.
Other outlets called it:
- “a masterclass,”
- “one of the best games of the year,”
- and “a new standard for coming-of-age stories.”
Meanwhile, regular players were asking revolutionary questions like:
- “Can I actually play the game?”
- “Why is this mostly cutscenes?”
- “How did this get a 10?”
Modern games journalism has reached the point where:
- if a game has licensed indie music,
- teenagers talking about feelings,
- and camera shots inspired by A24 movies,
reviewers immediately start levitating out of their chairs and writing paragraphs about “emotional authenticity.”
At one point, reviewers literally praised the game for being “light on mechanics.”
Imagine reviewing a racing game by saying:
“Thankfully there wasn’t too much driving.”
Final Verdict
Mixtape isn’t the worst game ever made.
It’s worse.
It’s aggressively critic-proof.
A carefully engineered “prestige indie experience” designed in a laboratory to harvest 10/10 reviews from people who think pressing forward slowly while sad music plays is the peak of interactive art.
By the end, I didn’t feel emotional.
I felt like I had accidentally attended a four-hour student film festival sponsored by Urban Outfitters.
