Just two months after launch, Ghost of Yōtei developers have confirmed that Ghost of Yōtei: Legends has already received its “last major planned update,” proving once again that modern live service games now have the lifespan of a fruit fly trapped inside a PS5 exhaust vent.

The announcement came via a PlayStation Blog post where Sucker Punch explained that April’s Raid update was intended to conclude the story of the Yōtei Six. Which is fantastic news for the three people who had just finished downloading the game’s tutorial.

Fans, naturally, reacted with the kind of restrained dignity you’d expect from people who spent 80 hours grinding spectral samurai pants. Reddit threads quickly filled with comments ranging from “Sad day” to elaborate conspiracy theories involving budget cuts, live-service pivots, and at least one guy claiming his cousin is spiritually connected to Sucker Punch through marriage.

To be fair, Sucker Punch never explicitly promised years of support. They simply released a free multiplayer mode, teased a raid, gave players exactly one raid, and then hit the tactical smoke bomb escape animation before anyone could ask where the roadmap was. It’s honestly kind of inspiring.

The speed of the shutdown has impressed industry analysts worldwide. Some studios spend years slowly disappointing their communities with delayed seasonal updates and underwhelming cosmetics. Sucker Punch instead chose the speedrun category.

“Last major planned update” is also one of the funniest phrases in gaming PR history because it technically leaves the door open for future additions while simultaneously communicating the emotional energy of a landlord shutting off your utilities.

Still, the community remains hopeful. Some fans believe smaller updates could continue, while others are convinced this is merely the calm before a massive expansion announcement. This optimism appears to be fueled primarily by denial and memories of Ghost of Tsushima eventually receiving additional Legends content years ago.

Meanwhile, somewhere inside Sony headquarters, a lone executive is probably staring at a whiteboard labeled “LIVE SERVICE STRATEGY” while a single sad flute version of the Ghost theme plays in the background.

At least the raid was good. Probably. Nobody had enough time to finish it before support ended.
